Synopsis
In the kingdom of Vallin, alchemy is practiced, and necromancy is forbidden dark magic. A curse called the "black rot" turns its victims a black color devoid of all light, freezing them in time. But the black rot is not the only threat to the kingdom; a death cult follows the Dark Mother, the goddess of death, and evil rumors abound of their secret meetings in the Ancient Ruins. Amid this background of a curse and evil magic, there is also a mystery. The former queen died during childbirth, yet no one knows how or why she died. Her Court Alchemist, Magnus, who was supposedly there that night, was banished from the castle afterward. Our story follows three characters: Princess Calandra Alpin lives a sheltered life in the castle, but that has not turned her into a shrinking violet. She is intelligent and argumentative, and has her own rules and convictions despite what others have planned for her. Passionate about alchemy and finding a cure for the black rot, she escapes her castle and upcoming arranged marriage to a prince from a faraway kingdom to search for "The Hermit," the alchemist Magnus, who was there the night her mother died. She begins her journey alone, in search of answers and a cure. Amara lives a simple life as a peasant in a small village. She is an orphan and never knew who her parents were. For some unknown reason, she looks exactly like Princess Calandra, although the two have no idea the other exists. After a horrifying experience, she has to run for her life. Never being able to leave her small village before, she could only dream about what was out there. She is thrust into this new world and must come to terms with her birth and its consequences. Prince Jinyong Long is from the kingdom of Silla, far away from the kingdom of Vallin. Known for his bravery and good looks, he returned to his palace the previous year, victorious from a long war in the south of his kingdom. He travels to meet his bride on the Great West Road, an arduous journey of over four weeks, only to find that the princess was kidnapped the night before his arrival. He swears an oath to the king to return his daughter safe and unharmed so he can marry the princess and take her back to Silla as his wife. Read how these characters' stories collide, and how they have to learn to work together to stop a curse and an evil goddess. And, in the process, learn more about themselves and their origins.

Chapter 1 - Prologue

The first day of the fourth month, twenty-seven minutes past the toll of the eleventh evening bell, year 1001 (twenty years in the past).

Court Alchemist Magnus ran up the stone staircase. He was rushing to his queen, desperate to tell her about the unnerving scene he witnessed earlier—Paracelsus, an apprentice alchemist, had just performed forbidden alchemy. The shock of it all was still fresh to him; he had no time to process it yet. His only thought was to get to the queen as quickly as possible.

He had been running up and down winding staircases in this dark castle for an hour. His long robes slowed him down, his lungs burned, and his legs ached as he struggled to catch his breath. He was an old man, and all his years spent in the laboratory had not acclimated him to physical exertion.

"My Queen," he called out tenderly and out of breath when he reached the top. Yet there was no answer. The queen's maidservants were not in the room, even though they should be. The queen had given birth earlier that evening, and it was suspicious that the room was empty at this hour.

The night was moonless and dark. There was faint light coming from a few candelabras, but what lit up the room was the lightning cracking outside the castle walls, illuminating everything momentarily in a cursed purple light. He did not hear it at first, perhaps because of the lightning or perhaps because of his still-lingering shock. When his eyes adjusted to the darkness, he saw the queen lying on the floor in a circle of blood, dead. But, before he could determine what happened to her, his eyes turned to the tiny figure in front of her, and that was when he finally heard it. It was the newborn princess, still coated in the protective vernix caseosa from birth. She was shivering in the cold room and screaming her lungs out.
