Chapter 49 - Chapter 49:"Where We Begin"

The next morning, Eliza felt like she was floating.

The air was fresher. The sky looked brighter. Even her mirror at home seemed to smile back at her. She stood in front of it, brushing her hair for what had to be the fifth time—not because it needed fixing, but because she couldn't stop thinking about him.

About the way Lucifer had looked at her in the rain… the way his fingers had brushed her cheek so gently, like she was something precious. Did that really happen? she kept asking herself, heart pounding like a secret drum. The way he held her hand, so natural and tender. The way he said, "You're beautiful like this," like it was the only truth in the world.

Butterflies swirled in her stomach just thinking about it, wings fluttering wild and free.

Her fingers brushed against her lips. He didn't kiss me, she thought. But it felt like he did. In every other way—the kind of kiss that lingers on your skin and in your mind long after it's over.

She was so lost in thought she nearly missed her stop. She jumped off the bus, her heart thudding loud enough to drown out the chatter of passing students. Her hands nervously fidgeted with her bag strap as she hurried down the school sidewalk.

And then… there he was.

Lucifer, leaning casually against her locker, looking like he belonged there. But the moment their eyes met, his whole posture shifted. Gone was the cool, effortless swagger—replaced by something softer, something almost… nervous.

His eyes softened in a way that made Eliza's chest tighten. Then, with a smile that could melt steel and ignite a thousand suns, he said,

"Hey, princess."

Her heart skipped a beat, caught in the sweetest trap.

She'd heard him say that nickname before—plenty of times. But today? Today it was different. It wasn't teasing. It wasn't playful. It was soft, honest. Like she was really his princess.

"Hi," she replied, cheeks burning in the best way, a shy smile blooming on her lips.

They walked to class together—no words needed, just a quiet, fluttering energy crackling between them like invisible fireworks.

Inside the classroom, they slid into their seats beside each other. The teacher started lecturing about quadratic equations—or something equally unimportant—but neither of them could focus.

Lucifer shifted slightly. Under the desk, his hand moved closer, brushing against hers with a featherlight touch.

Eliza felt it before she saw it—his pinky gently curling around hers, warm and deliberate.

Her breath caught. She looked at him, searching his eyes.

And there it was.

That tiny, nervous smile.

Not a smirk. Not a grin. Just the most heart-melting, you-make-me-shy-too kind of smile.

She smiled back, cheeks warming.

Their pinkies stayed linked like that until the bell rang, fingers speaking a silent promise neither dared say aloud.

---

After school, they found their way—almost instinctively—back to the quiet stairwell at the edge of the building. Their little world, untouched by noise or prying eyes.

Eliza leaned against the cool wall, her backpack resting at her feet. Lucifer stood in front of her, hands tucked into his pockets, eyes flicking to her lips then back to her eyes. He didn't move too close—just close enough.

That sweet, nervous distance.

The kind that whispered, I want to… but only if you want to too.

"I like this," Eliza said quietly, voice barely above a whisper.

Lucifer tilted his head, a playful glint in his eyes. "What? Skipping the crowd?"

She shook her head, a shy smile tugging at her lips. "No. I mean… this. Us. Like this."

His eyes softened, heart visible in the way they caught the fading afternoon light. "Me too."

A silence settled between them—not awkward, but full of butterflies and all the unsaid words dancing just beneath the surface.

Then Lucifer held up his pinky, a teasing grin tugging at his mouth.

"So… can I hold your hand again? Or is there like… a daily limit?"

Eliza laughed softly, warmth blooming in her chest like the sun finally rising after a long, cold night.

She hooked her pinky with his.

"No limit," she whispered. "You can hold it whenever you want."

Lucifer smiled like that was the best thing he'd ever heard.

This time, without hesitation, he took her whole hand in his, fingers curling around hers with a quiet confidence that made Eliza's heart race.

It wasn't like they hadn't held hands before—the past was full of friendship, jokes, and casual touches—but now it was different. Now, it was something new. Something they both knew without needing to say it aloud.

They just fit—two pieces slowly discovering how perfectly they matched.

---

As the days went on, they grew more comfortable with this new rhythm.

During class, under the desk, their fingers would find each other, fingers tracing secret lines only they could read. During breaks, they'd sneak away to quiet corners where Eliza would blush every time he looked at her for just a little too long.

Sometimes, he'd scribble on her notebook:

"Still dreaming about you."

Or:

"Your hand fits mine like it was made for it."

She'd reply with doodles of hearts, or a sassy line like:

"Cheesy. But keep going."

Their flirtations became bolder—not reckless or loud, but cozy, comfortable, like a warm blanket wrapped just right.

A secret smile here. A playful nudge there. A look that lasted a little too long when they passed in the hallway.

Lucifer had always been confident—bold, sure of himself—but now, around her, he was gentle. Careful. Like he didn't want to mess this up.

And Eliza? She was glowing. Like the whole world had suddenly shifted to brighter colors.

Ava, of course, noticed.

She watched with narrowed eyes every time Eliza came back from her locker with suspiciously red cheeks. Or when Lucifer's entire mood shifted the second Eliza entered the room.

But she didn't say anything.

Until one afternoon, as they left class together, Ava looped her arm through Eliza's and leaned in with a smirk.

"Just so you know… I approve."

Eliza blinked, caught off guard. "What?"

Ava gave her a knowing smile, eyes twinkling with mischief. "I mean, you're so bad at hiding it. But it's cute. I'm happy for you."

Eliza blushed deeper, the warmth spreading all the way to her toes. "Thanks," she murmured.

As they walked together across the courtyard, Ryan tossed a crumpled paper ball at Ava.

"Oi, Angrybird," he called out, grinning. "You're smiling too much. That can't be healthy."

Ava scowled, but there was a spark of amusement behind it. "Buzz off, Ryan."

"Aw, did I hit a nerve?" Ryan teased, winking at her. "You look extra cute when you're annoyed."

"You look extra punchable when you talk," Ava snapped—but she didn't walk away.

Eliza tilted her head, raising a brow as she watched them.

Was that… flirting?

She couldn't help but notice the tension bubbling between them—sharp, electric, and full of promise.

Maybe there was a new story brewing here, too.

But for now, Eliza's heart was busy for lucifer.

To be continued....
