Cherreads

Chapter 4 - Chapter 4 – A Taste of Home

The aroma of freshly baked bread drifted through the air as Alex Carter navigated the main thoroughfare of Nova Horizon. He'd spent most of the morning in the research lab, familiarizing himself with Dr. Tao's protocols and the advanced scanning equipment. His mind buzzed with questions—some about the artifact's design, others about its purpose. But now, the growl of his stomach reminded him that he was human too.

He followed the scent toward a small café nestled between the engineering labs and the community center. Its sign read The Starlight Café, the letters glowing softly in the colony's ambient light. A wooden bench out front was occupied by a pair of gardeners sharing laughter over steaming mugs. The scene was simple, yet comforting—a reminder that even at the edge of known space, humanity found ways to make anywhere feel like home.

Inside, the café was warm and inviting. The walls were adorned with paintings—some abstract, others depicting familiar Earth landscapes: rolling hills, oceans, bustling cities. The barista, a middle-aged man with graying hair and kind eyes, greeted Alex with a smile.

"First time here?" he asked, wiping his hands on a towel.

Alex nodded. "Yeah. It smells amazing."

"Best bread in the sector," the man said proudly. "Name's Marco. Welcome to The Starlight." He gestured to the menu, a simple affair with pastries, fresh fruit, and steaming cups of synthetic coffee that smelled almost like the real thing.

Alex ordered a cup of coffee and a slice of bread, taking a seat near the window. He watched colonists pass by outside: a young couple holding hands, a group of children sharing jokes, a pair of engineers deep in discussion. It struck him how normal it all felt, despite the fact that they were orbiting a distant planet light-years from Earth.

As he sipped his coffee, the door opened and Mira walked in, her braid swinging behind her. She spotted him instantly, a smile lighting her face. "Hey, newcomer. Mind if I join you?"

"Please," Alex said, gesturing to the empty seat across from him.

She settled in, ordering her own coffee from Marco before turning her attention to Alex. "So, how was your first morning in the lab?"

Alex leaned back, a grin spreading across his face. "Incredible. Dr. Tao showed me the artifact—it's… I don't even have words for it. It's beautiful and complicated and… alive, maybe."

Mira's eyes sparkled with curiosity. "Alive? That's a big word."

Alex shrugged, his excitement bubbling. "There's this pattern in the energy signature—Sora called it a heartbeat. It's like it's more than just a piece of machinery."

Mira nodded thoughtfully. "That's why Dr. Tao's team is so dedicated. That artifact could change everything we know about technology, maybe even about life itself. But don't lose yourself in the lab, okay? There's a whole colony out here that's worth discovering too."

Alex smiled, appreciating her concern. "I'll try not to. Besides, I can't stay away from this place too long." He lifted his coffee mug in a small toast. "Best coffee in the sector, right?"

She laughed, the sound warm and genuine. "You learn fast."

They chatted for a while, sharing stories about their lives before Nova Horizon. Mira had grown up in a coastal town, spending summers by the ocean. Alex told her about the dusty roads of his hometown, the long bike rides under starry skies. Each tale was a thread weaving them closer together.

Eventually, Mira stood. "Duty calls. I'm on shift at the hydroponics lab this afternoon. But we should hang out again soon—maybe a real dinner next time."

Alex's heart skipped a beat, but he managed a grin. "I'd like that."

She squeezed his shoulder lightly before heading out, leaving Alex with a warm glow that had nothing to do with the coffee.

He finished his bread, savoring each bite. It wasn't quite like the fresh loaves from home, but it was close enough. Marco approached, refilling his mug with a practiced hand.

"You're fitting in already," he said with a knowing smile.

Alex nodded, a content sigh escaping his lips. "Feels like it."

"That's the magic of Nova Horizon," Marco said. "No matter where you're from, you're part of the family now."

Alex smiled, letting the words sink in. As he watched the sunlamps shift, casting a warm afternoon glow over the café, he felt a sense of belonging settle over him—a feeling he'd been chasing across the stars.

Outside, children laughed, engineers debated, and somewhere in the lab, secrets waited to be uncovered. But for now, Alex allowed himself to simply be—to savor the warmth of coffee, the kindness of strangers, and the quiet realization that he might finally be home.
