“And what might that be?” the Duke asked.
“If my father has ever praised his daughters in front of you, it was purely out of fatherly love. After all, even a hedgehog finds its offspring endearing.” Despite the Duke’s derisive snort, Chloe pressed on. “And though he adores his two daughters, he is not so naïve as to forget that House Verdier is far below House Thisse in rank. Chloe swallowed hard, summoning the courage to continue.
“You are not the only one who’d prefer not to become involved with an impaired woman. The same is true of all men, I am sure.”
The Duke’s eyes narrowed in displeasure.
“Did I not suggest that you reserve your self-deprecation for your journals?”
