Chapter 1 - The Everchanging

BAM! BAM! BAM!

On a dark stormy night, three gunshots rang out, the sound bouncing across the walls of the damp alleyway. A women could be seen, clouded eyes half rolled back in her head.

"MAMA! MAMA! MAMA WHATS GOING ON IM SCARED!!?!" A small boy screeched desperately

"Sshh my love, it'll be okay. Mama's here. It'll all be okay" the women whispered

The young women then wrapped her tired heavy arms around her only child, her small little light in this world, she did not want to leave him. She did not want this to be the end, not seeing her handsome young boy become the great man she knew he would be, a man greater then even his father.

"Mon amor, Mama will be leaving soon, I'm so sorry my sweet boy, I love you." She whispered quietly while hugging her son

The young boy lay frozen, locked in his mother warm embrace, something he loved. Something he could feel getting weaker and weaker by the second, no words could escape his mouth only the stiffled sobs that mixed with his mother's already drenched clothing. Until finally his mother's arms went limp, no longer was he embraced in the warmth of a mother love, he was left in the cold and dark storm with nothing.

As the sirens grew closer, their lights high lighting the sad gruesome scene, of a poor young women laying on the rough hard concrete surrounded by running blood and being held by a tiny young boy.

The Police and Medics rushed forward, a broad shoulderd bespectacled man rushed forward his heart pounding as he saw the small boy. He quickly took off his jacket and wrapped it around the boy the best he could.

"Come on son, we gotta get you warmed up, it'll be okay" he cast a weary glance at what he assumed was this childs mother

Dead...without a doubt...they were to late...

The Medics rushed towards the women, two of them carrying a stretcher the third carrying a first aid kit. Before the third even had the chance to take anything out to perhaps help, they did a quick sweep over the women on the ground, dead. They has seen enough of the dead to know that she had joined them.

With a tired heavy sigh that almost seemed to come from all of them, they bent down carefully "1,2,3, up" they whispered in unison lifting the women's body on the stretcher, covering her with a blanket. One of them walked over to the officers, away from the boy.

"She has three gunshots wounds to the chest, and a bruise on her arm" he said just loud enough for the officer to hear

"I saw, we'll have to get an autopsy and see what we can scavenge from this crime scene. I'll run her I.D through our system see if anything comes up". The officer responded solemnly

"See ya around Charles, hope y'all can get this mess cleared up. City's gone to shit" The medic mumbled walking away

Charles, the bespecaled Police Officer, walked towards his car and bent down towards the child sitting in the car.

"How ya doing kid?" He asked as sincerely as he could

Silence...nothing...just a lone child staring forward with half open eyes.

Charles slowly stood up, pinched the bridge of his nose and sighed heavily. Sometimes, he hated this job.

"Hey, Darwin, imma get this kid somewhere warm get everything you can from here and make sure its all documented, rains gonna make this a b*tch so don't dawdle around" he barked at another officer

"Yea alright Charles, see ya tomorrow" Darwin responded

As Charles drove away, he adjusted his rear view mirror, looking at the kid in his backseat. As gentle jass music softly sparked to life inside his vehicle, he noticed something strange. He slowed down and looked closer, the boys eyes, foggy and focused forward...were..changing colors?

Charles sighed as he focused back on the road, he really needed some sleep, or maybe it was all the coffee he downed every morning like there was going to be none tomorrow. As he pulled into the police station and got out of his car moving to the back where the kid was.

"Come on son, gotta come in with me for now, it'll be alright" he slowly reached to pick him up, not feeling or hearing any response against such a movement he walked into the station. Softly setting him down in one of the chairs inside his work area, Charles got on his computer and started running the mother name through their database.

One ping came back, a parking ticket for the women matching the name and description of the I.D. issued just this morning by an Officer Jones

No other information on this, just a strange statement that was as mysterious as it was strange. As he was lost in thought about this matter, the young boy. Now recognized as one Orthas Sterling sat perfectly still unmoving, yet his eyes, his eyes, were shifting.

Blue,Red,Gold,Black,Green,Purple, Brown, rotating and morphing every second. All gone unnoticed by the world, a strange occurrence that defied science. Eventually the sun speckled the sky with soft orange and yellow light, and Charles slowly got up with a groan realizing that he had gone down this strange rabbit hole for what seemed to be hours, he worriedly turned to the child who was...asleep???

Sitting upright, Orthas his eyes closed looked like a statue untouched by the evil of the world, so Charles gently and with no other options at the moment took him into his arms and decided to let him stay at his place until everything was settled. He didn't want this poor boy waking up alone, not having anyone to look after him after such a horrible night.

Some hours later, late into the night. Charles was startled awake by a frightened scream. He ran through his apartment grabbing his gun as he burst into his room worry struck across his face, there sat Orthas covered in sweat and a blanket spawrles across the floor, shaking, staring forward without blinking, as if being haunted by some horrible thing that had its clutches in him.

And as far as Orthas is concerned that is exactly what was happening, the memory of the men, his mother ushering him in a hidding place while he overheard muffled conversation from the alley, the sudden silence and then suddenly.
