Chapter 11 - Refraction

Flashback: Kael's Childhood

The hospital room was dimly lit, sterile, and cold.

A young woman lay exhausted on the bed, her skin pale and sweating under the harsh fluorescent light.

Kael's mother.

She held a tiny bundle wrapped in white cloth—the first breath of a child born with impossible power.

The doctors whispered urgently.

She was failing.

Every heartbeat was a battle.

The Moment

Kael, a fragile infant, lay between life and death.

His mother's hand trembled as she reached for him, eyes filled with pain and hope.

"Please… stay alive," she whispered.

But the power inside Kael surged uncontrollably.

The doctors told her the vessel he was born to be was too much for a human womb.

The Loss

Kael's mother didn't survive.

She died hours after giving birth.

The hospital corridor was silent except for the muffled sobs of a nurse.

Kael was left in the care of strangers.

Kael's Awakening

Growing up, Kael knew nothing of his origins.

Only that he was different.

His skin flickered faintly like stars.

His touch left warmth that burned.

He learned quickly to hide his abilities—afraid, lonely, a boy trying to survive in a world that couldn't understand him.

Turning Point

One night, after a devastating fight with bullies, Kael accidentally released a burst of heat so intense it scorched the ground beneath him.

He realized then—

He was no ordinary child.

But instead of hope, he felt anger.

"Why did my mother have to die?" he shouted into the empty night.

"Why me?"

That anger became a void inside him.

A hunger for power.

To never be weak again.

Present Day

Kael clenched his fists, memories flooding back.

The loss.

The loneliness.

The power he could barely control.

His eyes glowed brighter.

He whispered:

"I will be whole.I will be the sun itself."
