Chapter 4 - Am I Really the Hero? - Chapter 4 - Welcome to Aegis

There are six types of magic one can use. Fire magic, water magic, earth magic, air magic, darkness magic, and light magic. Humans usually have water, earth, or wind magic, while demons have fire or earth magic. Light is a rare type of magic used by humans, and darkness is also a rare type of magic but it's used by demons.

I, Aric, was blessed with a total of three types of magic: fire, wind, and a bit of light magic. Having more than two types of magic is rare.

"I should use light magic since demons are weak to light, but I don't have much of it. I excel in fire magic, so maybe I should use that." Thought Aric.

As he approached the battle near the gates of Aegis, he saw the knights fighting the demons.

Aric took out his sword and combined fire magic with it. Then he killed four demons in a second. The demons' bodies that he cut were burning.

The knights looked over in shock.

"Look! It's The Crimson Hero!!"

"We're saved!"

At that moment, Aric noticed a couple of demons entering the gates of Aegis. He used wind magic to push them away and then slashed them with his sword.

"That was close," said Aric. He was excited since he hadn't fought in a long time.

Aric continued fighting with the knights and mages who were shooting magic at the demons.

After a while, they defeated most of them, but suddenly a demon with a human-like appearance appeared. It was a demon from one of the demon commanders' squads.

"Is that demon one of them..?" murmured one of the knights.

With that human-like appearance and the dark magic I'm sensing from him, yes, I'm sure of it, he is one of the demons who serves the Demon Lord and his commanders.

There are two types of demons: those who attack humans on instinct like animals, and those who possess intelligence. You can tell the difference by looking at them. The ones that attack on instinct look more like monsters, while the intelligent ones have a human-like appearance, can use magic, and can speak human language. They work for the Demon Lord.

"What is he doing here? The fight between the heroes and Demon Lord just ended a couple days ago, and the Demon Lord is already attacking us?!"

The knights were shocked. Then the hero took a step forward towards the demon.

"You sure you want to take me on, a hero?" Aric was confident. After all, the demon in front of him wasn't one of the commanders, so he was confident he could take him on.

"Hero? You still call yourself that after losing to the Demon Lord?" said the demon laughing.

Aric didn't react. He really didn't care what others thought of him.

"So are you going to continue talking or fight me already?"

"I'd love to, but the commander didn't order me to fight. I'm here just to see how the knights do against the demons that were attacking them cause i was bored, but i didn't expect a hero to be here, so I'll take my leave now."

A knight turned towards the hero. "Hero, we can't let him go like that. He's a demon!"

"Let him be. If he returns to the forest, the monster-like demons will follow him there. Our first priority is protecting the city, not making a bigger mess of a fight. Plus, if we did attack, the other demons from his squad might come too."

"Wise words, hero. For now, let us return back to the city and how about we make a party for this victory and your arrival?"

"Sure, let's do that."

As the hero, knights, and the mages walked through the gate, they were greeted by the citizens of the city.

"Look! It's the Crimson Hero!"

"Thank you for saving us, hero!"

Aric liked this city because the people didn't care about his appearance or that he was a commoner. That was a reason why he chose to come here first for his training adventure.

"Last time I was here, I was with the other heroes so I didn't get to fight much, but this time I will."

And like that, he went to get a room for the time he was planning on staying in Aegis.

After a while, it was evening and Aric was getting ready for the party.

On his way to the party, walking through the road, he saw beautiful lights shining like the sun. The entire city was glowing with joy and celebration.

When he arrived, there was a big feast in the middle of the square, and the citizens were waiting for him.

"Welcome, Hero!" said the citizens at once.

Some kids ran up to the hero excitedly. "Hero! Hero! Show us magic!"

Aric smiled and raised his hand. With a flick of his fingers, he made some of the spoons on the table float in the air using his wind magic.

The kids were amazed. "We want to see the fire magic and the sword you used to kill those bad demons!"

"I can show you my fire magic, but I can't show you my sword. It's dangerous." Then Aric opened his palm, and a flame appeared in his hand.

"More! We want to see more!" the kids cheered excitedly.

"Sorry kids, but we don't want to burn the city down, do we?" Aric chuckled.

"Aww..." the kids said, disappointed.

"Let's go eat something, kids. Look at all the amazing food on the table." Aric smiled.

The kids ran toward the food, and Aric decided to grab something to eat as well. While he was enjoying the food, somebody approached him from behind.

Aric turned around and saw that it was one of the knights.

"Are you enjoying the food, hero?"

"Yes, it's quite good."

"Thank you again for helping us during the battle. Who knows how long it would've taken us to defeat them if it wasn't for you."

"It was my pleasure, but I couldn't have done it without your help."

"Oh right...! I was wondering, for how long are you planning to stay in Aegis?"

"For about a month, I think."

"A month, huh? Well, our job protecting the city will be easier this month." The knight smiled. "I don't have anything more to say. I'll take my leave then. Farewell, hero."

"Farewell."

After a couple of hours, the party ended and Aric returned to his room.

"Ugh, that was exhausting," he sighed.

And he went directly to bed to sleep.
