Chapter 3 - CH 3: Realization

Ch3

A blink. Maybe more than one. Suzuki Satoru felt like blinking a lot right now. The world was brightly shining into his eyes, and it strangely did not hurt. He stood... somewhere surrounded by a lush green environment. Trees and life were bristling all around him, but that was not what the salaryman Suzuki Satoru was staring at. No.

He was staring at the sea. A wide blue sea, seemingly endless. The sun shone down upon him, with gentle rays making the sea shine, as if diamonds were underneath its surface. The sky was clear, and he could clearly hear the noise of the birds, which were circling the island. While he just sat there. And stared.

"What?..."

The first words He uttered were filled with nothing but utter confusion and disbelief. He was so absorbed by the view that he didn't even notice his voice. A deep, rich voice, which would have come off as regal, were it not laced with whatever it was that he felt in that moment. He just sat there and slowly let himself be absorbed by what he saw. Then after a few seconds, he scrambled to his feet and repeated his first word in a much higher tone, clearly laced with panic.

"WHAH????"

In the very moment it happened, however, he calmed down. Unnaturally so. He himself was nearly more surprised by that than by the change in his environment.

He repeated it again. This time in a calm way, as if testing, to see if he would receive an answer.

"What."

He noticed the deep tone of his voice and immediately moved his hand to cover his mouth in shock at what he was hearing. It did not seem like his night, or rather his day, was growing simpler, because the hard surface he touched was not what his face used to feel like. And not just his face. He moved his hand around his face and only got a numb feeling, pinpointing what he was touching. He noted that feeling while hearing the sound as if a stone were scraping against another.

He then saw it. In the corner of his vision, where he had led his hand to be, was a white bone resembling a finger. The finger moved when he moved his, and when he decided to hold out his hand to confirm the theory that had taken shape in his head, the entire hand left his face and spread its bony white appendages out in front of him.

Suzuki Satoru was panicking. It was a slow panic, which seemed to increase with every discovery about what seemed to be himself. Without thinking, he pulled back his hand and rubbed his eyes... Only to feel a part of his hand disappear in a crevice. He froze. Before letting out a scream and pulling out his hand, he felt a flicker of something staying on his finger for a while and disappearing.

He was about to scream again before it happened once more. That unnatural sensation seemingly fogging his mind and then disappearing along with his panic and fear. But not with his confusion.

So he tested it again. He stuck out a finger and then slowly put it where his eyes should have been. Yet he did not feel it. He could not feel his eyes. His panic started rising again, but as if having gotten used to it, the strange, unnatural sensation quickly calmed him down. He exhaled and then slowly pulled out his finger. Something akin to a red fire was stuck on his finger for but a moment, disappearing right after that. The deep red color of the fire immediately reminded him of his avatar's eyes special effect. The realization hit him like a truck. A bony hand, red fiery eyes, and as he looked down in between his ribs, a pulsating red orb.

"I'm still in Yggdrasil?" He murmured. "But the server countdown..." He stopped midsentence. He couldn't remember the last 10 seconds of the countdown, but he had noticed something. The ocean, the birds, and the wind he could feel in between his bones, and the smell was all too real. FAR too real. To the point it was illegal. He did not panic this time as he spoke the next words out loud.

[GM-CALL]

Nothing happened. He tried again, the same command, despite the hunch he started having about the situation he was in.

[GM-CALL]

Nothing happened. He tried a different spell this time.

[MESSAGE]

It failed. He felt a connection, seemingly looking for the contact of one of the emergency contacts before failing.

He froze after that. He had FELT the spell. He had FELT its connection breaking upon the failure to find the contact. And that without a HUD.

How had he... No. The Overlord did not exhale or react in any dramatic way this time. He simply pointed his finger at the water and cast [Magic Arrow].

A small magic circle appeared in front of his finger, and out of it, a small yellow ball of light was sent towards the sea, creating a splash comparable to that of a small stone.

"I can use magic." The undead had seemingly regained its ability to think and move and started walking towards the water, trying to catch its reflection. Not being able to do so due to the clarity of the water, he then simply pulled out a mirror out of his inventory and saw what he looked like. He then simply put it back afterwards, noting how easily he had accessed his inventory.

"Haaahhh. Quick recap. I am in the form of my Yggdrasil avatar. I can access both my inventory and my magic. I am on an... an island?"

Looking left and right in a careful fashion, he started berating himself. "I shouldn't have spent so much time doing nothing but sitting there and panicking. Staying calm in an unknown situation is practically the basis of Survival for Dummies. Punitto Moe would have beaten me for the sheer time it took me to recover."

[Mana Efficiency]

[Perfect Unknowable]

[Fly]

He quickly cast those three spells and then quickly flew up while remaining wary of anything that could have been seen as a threat. He had a lot of faith in [Perfect Unknowable] due to the fact that even other level 100s would not be able to detect him if they did not have levels in divination, specialized magic, or magic items, but given the fact that he was most likely not in Yggdrasil, he felt it was important to take precautions. [Mana efficiency] was perfect for that. It was a spell that lessened the mana cost of magic items or spells while lessening their power. So while it was not particularly strong with offense, it was a useful sell for utility spells such as [Fly] or [Perfect Unknowable], which would steadily drain his mana. The island that he was on was rather small, and as far as he could see, there was no civilization, but he still stopped in midair to simply take in the view. The endless ocean, the lush island, and the clear sky. He had never seen a sky so blue, and the same could be said for the ocean, which he was seeing for the first time in his life. He soon snapped out of it and then landed on the island.

It seemed to be heaven to him for now, so he wanted a bit of time to think about his next course of action.

Well hello. Author here. This is my first fanfic, so feel free to be harsh or to drown me in praise. I'll gladly welcome both. I have to be honest. I don't have much of an idea how to continue the fic. I figured that maybe anyone who reads it might just comment what they thunk might be a good idea. Should he follow the Straw Hats? Or join the Doflamingo family? Or Kaido, Big Mom, or the Marines? This is basically just practice for me, but I don't like leaving things unfinished, so please give me advice.
