Chapter 23 - The Night You Let Me Die

The air was brittle when Ashara summoned him.

Not in court. Not among silks or gold or cloaked whispers.

She chose the Chamber of Veils, a forgotten hall beneath the old east tower where light could not lie. No torches—only the flickering glow of memory glass. This room had once been used for sacred trials and unspoken vows.

Tonight, it would hold the weight of truth.

Kallad entered at her request, boots echoing on the cracked obsidian floor. His eyes, that storm-touched gray, were unreadable—but wary.

"You sent for me."

Ashara stood still before him, hands clasped behind her back. No crown. No armor. Only her voice, and the storm inside it.

"You once swore you would die beside me," she said. "Do you remember?"

Kallad did not flinch. "Yes."

Her voice was a blade. "Then why didn't you?"

He looked at her for a long moment, his expression unreadable. Then:

"I tried."

"No," she said, stepping forward. "You knew. You stood beside the priestess the night I was condemned. You heard her speak the ritual. You left me in that chamber. You let them drag me to the altar."

Silence.

Only the slow beat of the Heart of Echoes beneath her ribcage answered.

She stepped closer.

"Say it, Kallad," she whispered. "Say what you did."

He closed his eyes.

"I believed… it was the only way to save the empire."

Ashara's hand trembled.

"I was the empire."

"You were marked," he said, voice raw. "The gods showed us your death would stop the unraveling. I—I thought if I obeyed, I could protect what was left."

"And what was left?" she asked, bitter. "A hollow crown? A puppet on scorched strings?"

He didn't answer.

She moved again—now chest to chest. A heartbeat apart.

Her voice dropped. "Would you do it again?"

His breath caught.

"I don't know."

That broke something.

Ashara reached for the dagger at her hip—not to strike, but to offer.

She held it between them, hilt first.

"Then swear again. Here. To me. Not to gods. Not to thrones. Not to the shadows that pull your strings."

Kallad stared at the blade.

"You would still trust me?"

"No," she said simply. "But I would bind you. And make you choose every day to earn what was once freely given."

His hands closed around the dagger slowly.

The weight between them shifted.

"I never stopped regretting," he said, voice hollow.

"I never stopped remembering," she replied.

When he left, the chamber felt colder.

Ashara sank to her knees.

Not from weakness—but from the ache that forgiveness carved deeper than vengeance ever could.

Ezekiel found her minutes later, silent as always, standing just beyond the veil.

"You didn't kill him," he said quietly.

"No."

"Do you wish you had?"

Ashara didn't look up. "Not yet."
