The sound of Gabriel Donovan's laughter echoes through the phone like nails on a chalkboard. I can picture him perfectly - sprawled in his leather chair, probably with his feet up on some mahogany desk, celebrating what he thinks is my complete destruction.
"Did you see it, Ethan? Did you fucking see it?" Gabriel's voice carries even though he's not on speaker. "The great Noah Lancaster, exposed as a fraud on live television!"
Ethan Pierce's response is muffled, but I catch the word "beautiful" and something about "justice."
I'm sitting in the back of a cab, watching the city blur past while Gabriel gloats to his friend about my downfall. He has no idea I can hear every word through Chloe's phone, which she's holding with shaking hands.
"Try calling her again," Gabriel commands. "I want to hear how she's handling this disaster."
Chloe stares at her phone screen, Gabriel's contact information glowing. Her finger hovers over the call button, but she doesn't press it.
