Chapter 33 - Chapter 33 – One Year Later

April 2012.

Michael Schmidt was now 15 years old.

And the most terrifying high school basketball player in the country.

The championship glow from the previous year never faded. Instead, it evolved—into something harder. Sharper. Unavoidable.

He didn't just dominate in his sophomore year. He broke the system.

Averaging 36.2 points, 8.7 rebounds, 7.1 assists, and 3.3 steals per game.

Games were over by halftime. Defenses tried zones, traps, junk schemes. Didn't matter. He dissected them all.

Multiple 50-point games. A triple-double streak that lasted seven games.

And unlike the year before—there was no struggle. No mental dips. No exhaustion. Just control.

The Michael Jordan template surged.

He didn't play for hype. But the hype arrived anyway.

ESPN featured him twice in three months. Overtime named him "The Shadow King" for how effortlessly he moved in traffic. Bleacher Report released a highlight mix that hit 3.2 million views in two days.

He got offered every major D1 scholarship in the country before Christmas. Duke. UNC. Kentucky. Kansas. UCLA.

But when spring arrived, Michael sat down with his mom at the kitchen table and laid out a different plan.

"I want to go where I can touch the ball every possession. Not where I'm another name on a jersey."

She looked at him, silent, before nodding.

"I raised you to lead, not to blend in."

He kept his future plans quiet.

Reporters speculated. Coaches campaigned. Offers kept flooding in.

But Michael gave no interviews, made no social media posts, and ignored every public ranking.

When asked where he was going, he only said one thing:

"Somewhere I can lead. That's all that matters.""

That summer, he played in the Drew League. Then in Rucker Park. Then in a private scrimmage with NBA pros.

He held his own in every environment. Outplayed G-League talent.

By August 2012, scouts had him listed as the #1 high school prospect—ever.

Not just for his stats. But for how effortless it looked.

And for how clear it became that he was still unlocking himself.

One more season until college. One final march through high school.

And then?

The draft spotlight would come.

Whether the NBA was ready or not.
