Chapter 8 - Letters Never Sent

"Maa, main aaj bhi tere liye likhta hoon. Bas… tu sun nahi sakti.""Mom, I still write to you. You just can't hear me anymore."— Aryan Sen

It was supposed to be a normal afternoon.

The library was half empty. Rain outside again — as if Tokyo had forgotten how to be dry.

Aryan had gone to grab tea for them from the vending machine.Akari waited at the table, flipping through their shared Hindi–Japanese notebook.

By accident, another small black notebook slipped from his bag.Leather cover. Worn edges. No label.

She picked it up without thinking.

And then, before she could stop herself—She opened it.

"Dear Maa,Today someone said I look like you. I smiled, but inside, it felt like losing you again."

"Papa didn't come to my competition. I won anyway. Gold medal. You would've hugged me, I know."

"Sometimes I punch the wall just to feel my heartbeat."

"I'm learning Japanese now. I don't know why, but there's this girl…"

Akari froze.

She hadn't meant to read. But the words felt like whispers.

Not written for her.But now imprinted inside her.

When Aryan returned with tea, she quickly shut the notebook and slid it back into his bag.

But her expression had changed.

And Aryan noticed.

He sat down.Didn't speak.Waited.

Then said softly:

"You read it?"

She looked up, startled."I'm… sorry. I didn't mean to—"

"It's okay," he interrupted."I leave it there sometimes... hoping someone will read."

Akari's hands tightened around the cup.

"She was… kind?" she asked.

He nodded.

"She made chai every evening. Told stories about gods and stars. When she died… I stopped listening to stories."

Akari didn't speak.

Instead, she slowly pulled out her own notebook.Wrote something.

Then pushed it toward him.

He read:

"You tell stories through fists.I… tell them through silence.Maybe we can teach each other how to speak again."

He didn't smile.He didn't cry.

He just whispered, so softly she barely heard:

"You already are."

And in that moment, without touching hands, without any hug or tear —a boy who had only spoken to his dead mother for yearsfinally spoke to someone else…

And the girl who had no one left to write tostarted writing with someone.
