Chapter 2 - chapter: 2

*Unfinished Business*

Emily's heart skipped a beat as she heard her name being called. She turned to see Jake walking towards her, a determined look on his face.

"Hey, wait up," Jake said, catching up to her. "I wanted to talk to you some more."

Emily hesitated, unsure if she was ready to prolong their conversation. But something about Jake's gentle tone put her at ease.

"Okay," she said, slowing down to walk beside him.

They strolled through the parking lot, the only sound being the crunch of gravel beneath their feet. Emily felt a sense of nostalgia wash over her, remembering the countless times they'd walked together like this.

"So, what did you want to talk about?" Emily asked, breaking the silence.

Jake took a deep breath before speaking. "I wanted to apologize for the way things ended between us," he said, his voice filled with sincerity. "I was young and stupid, and I didn't appreciate what we had."

Emily's heart skipped a beat as she processed his words. She'd never expected Jake to apologize, especially not now.

"It's okay, Jake," she said finally, trying to sound casual. "We've both moved on. It's water under the bridge."

But Jake's eyes told her that he wasn't convinced. "I don't know if I've moved on," he said, his voice low and husky. "I've thought about you a lot over the years, Emily."

Emily's heart fluttered at his admission, and she felt a spark of attraction ignite between them.

Emily's heart fluttered at his admission, and she felt a spark of attraction ignite between them.

As they stood there, the tension between them grew thicker than the night air. Emily's heart was racing, and she could feel Jake's eyes on her, searching for something.

"I've thought about you too," Emily admitted, her voice barely above a whisper.

Jake's face lit up with a soft smile, and he took a step closer to her. "Really?" he asked, his voice filled with hope.

Emily nodded, feeling a sense of vulnerability wash over her. "Yeah, really," she said, her eyes locking onto his.

The air was charged with electricity as they stood there, the past and present colliding in a swirl of emotions. Emily felt like she was standing at a crossroads, unsure which path to take.

Jake's eyes seemed to bore into her soul, as if searching for answers to questions she wasn't sure she was ready to answer. And yet, Emily felt drawn to him, like a moth to a flame.

Without thinking, Jake reached out and gently brushed a strand of hair behind Emily's ear. The touch sent shivers down her spine, and she felt her heart skip a beat.

"I'm glad I saw you tonight," Jake said, his voice low and husky.

Emily's pulse quickened as she met his gaze. "Me too," she replied, her voice barely audible.

The moment hung between them, heavy with possibility. Emily wondered what would happen next, and whether she was ready to face the consequences.

Suddenly, Jake's phone buzzed, breaking the spell. He glanced at the screen and frowned.

"I'm so sorry, Emily," he said, "but I need to go. My daughter's mom is calling, and I need to take this."

Emily's heart sank, but she nodded understandingly. "It's okay, Jake. I should probably get going too."

As they said their goodbyes, Emily couldn't shake off the feeling that their encounter was far from over. In fact, it felt like it was just beginning.

As Jake answered the phone, Emily couldn't help but feel a pang of disappointment. She had been enjoying their conversation, and the sudden interruption felt like a harsh reality check.

"Hey, Sarah, what's up?" Jake said, his voice low and calm.

Emily watched as Jake listened to the person on the other end of the line, his expression growing more serious by the second.

"Okay, okay, I'll be right there," Jake said finally, his voice tinged with frustration.

He ended the call and turned to Emily, apologetic. "I'm so sorry, but I need to go. My daughter's mom is having some issues with her, and I need to take care of it."

Emily nodded understandingly. "It's okay, Jake. Family comes first."

Jake smiled, relief washing over his face. "Thanks for understanding, Emily. I'll walk you to your car?"

As they walked, Emily couldn't help but notice the way Jake's eyes crinkled at the corners when he smiled. It was a familiar gesture, one that brought back memories of their past.

When they reached Emily's car, Jake turned to her, his eyes serious. "I'd like to see you again, Emily. Maybe we can grab coffee or something?"

Emily's heart skipped a beat as she considered his request. She wasn't sure if she was ready to open herself up to Jake again, but a part of her wanted to see where things might go.

"Okay," she said finally, smiling up at him. "I'd like that."

Jake's face lit up with a smile, and he leaned in, his lips brushing against her cheek. "I'll call you tomorrow," he whispered, his breath sending shivers down her spine.

As Emily watched Jake walk away, she couldn't help but wonder what she had just gotten herself into.
