Chapter 10 - Chapter 10: The President's Unconventional Defense

The corridor went silent, save for the dignitary's increasingly agitated huffing. All eyes were on President Sterling. The Chief of Staff, David Finch, rushed forward, clearly preparing to apologize profusely and offer Ellie up as a diplomatic sacrifice.

But President Sterling held up a hand. His expression was unreadable. Then, he stepped forward, a surprising calm in his demeanor.

"My esteemed colleague," President Sterling said, his voice resonating with authority, "I assure you, this was no insult. Quite the opposite, in fact."

Everyone stared, bewildered. Ellie held her breath.

Sterling walked over to Ellie, who was still frozen in mortification. He placed a hand gently on her shoulder. "Miss Chen here," he announced, addressing the dignitary, "is our White House's most esteemed 'Coffee Connoisseur and Strategic Spill Specialist.'"

Ellie's jaw dropped. What?

President Sterling continued, without missing a beat, "It's a highly classified, ancient White House tradition. Before any major negotiation, we perform the 'Coffee Cleansing Ritual.' A symbolic act of... purification. The spilling of the President's personal, most sacred brew, upon the most honorable guest, signifies the washing away of all preconceived notions, all stubborn disagreements, leaving us with a clean slate for honest, open dialogue."

He looked directly at the dignitary, his eyes twinkling. "It means, my friend, that our discussions today will be exceptionally productive. Consider yourself truly honored."

The dignitary, who had been sputtering, now looked utterly flummoxed. He glanced at his indignant aides, then back at President Sterling, who maintained an impossibly straight face. The concept was so utterly bizarre, so audaciously confident, that it seemed to short-circuit the dignitary's rigid understanding of protocol. He slowly, hesitantly, looked down at the coffee stain on his chest.

After a long, agonizing silence, a small, almost imperceptible smile touched the dignitary's lips. "A... a cleansing ritual?" he repeated, trying out the words. "Indeed. Fascinating. Highly... unorthodox." He then surprised everyone by letting out a booming, if slightly forced, laugh. "Well, then! It appears I am indeed honored! Perhaps we should ensure the coffee is exceptionally hot for the next session, Mr. President?"

President Sterling clapped the dignitary on the shoulder, a wide, genuine grin spreading across his face. "An excellent suggestion, my friend! Miss Chen, you heard the man. Extra hot next time. And perhaps some artisanal beans." He then lowered his voice, just for Ellie to hear, "And please, try to aim for his political opponents next time."

Ellie, still reeling from the President's outrageous save, felt a burst of laughter bubble up inside her. He had just turned her catastrophic blunder into a diplomatic triumph. This man was truly something else. And the way he had defended her, with such audacious charm and a twinkle in his eye… it sent a warmth through her that had nothing to do with hot coffee. She was not just a cleaner; she was the President's "Strategic Spill Specialist." Her life had truly taken an absurd, wonderful turn.
