"Five million is a hefty price for information that might not be worth anything, Uncle Hugo," I said, pacing alongside the manicured hedge outside the Johnson estate. My cheek still stung from where Imogen had struck me earlier.
"Oh, believe me, it's worth every penny." His voice oozed desperation despite his attempt to sound confident. "This isn't just some petty gossip. This is about who you really are."
I stopped walking. "What exactly do you know?"
"Enough to turn your world upside down." He laughed nervously. "Imogen refused to pay. Said she didn't care about your parentage as long as you stayed away from her family."
Of course she did. I gripped the phone tighter. "And how do I know you're not just making this up to extort money from me?"
"Because I have proof. Documents. Photos. Things that were never meant to see the light of day."
