Chapter 3 - The Shadows of Duty

The following days were laced with the heaviness of unsaid words, each moment spent apart from Elizabet stretching into an eternity. Senja threw himself into his studies, trying to numb the ache in his chest, but nothing could stop the thoughts of her. The words they had exchanged in the gardens haunted him, echoing in his mind like a song that could never be fully forgotten.

The distance between them only seemed to grow. Elizabet remained encircled by her royal duties, each passing day pushing her closer to her inevitable marriage to Lord Armitage. The court, ever-watchful and ever-judging, continued its ceaseless buzz. There was no room for weakness in the palace no room for love that didn't serve the greater purpose. And yet, there was a part of Elizabet that refused to fully surrender, even as the chains of duty tightened around her.

One afternoon, as Senja walked along the palace's grand hallways, the faint sound of soft footsteps behind him brought him to an abrupt halt. He turned, and there she was Elizabet, her face drawn with a mix of determination and sorrow. Her eyes locked with his, and for a brief moment, the entire world seemed to fall away.

"You're leaving," Senja said, his voice low, as he saw the packed bag slung over her shoulder.

She gave him a small, weary smile. "I am."

Senja's heart skipped a beat. "Where are you going?"

She hesitated before answering. "I cannot remain here any longer, Senja. Not when I feel this way. Not when I know I'm about to lose myself in a life that I did not choose."

Senja felt a surge of hope then immediately crushed it with the reality of their situation. "And where will you go? There is no place for you outside the palace."

"I know." Her voice cracked slightly. "But I must find my own way, even if just for a little while. I cannot marry Lord Armitage. Not if it means sacrificing everything that makes me who I am."

Senja took a step toward her, his heart swelling with both fear and longing. "Elizabet, this is dangerous. You know what your absence will cause. The court will never forgive you for this."

"I am already trapped, Senja," she whispered, her voice a mixture of desperation and quiet strength. "I've been trapped in this role, this life, for so long. If I stay, I will lose myself. And I cannot lose myself for the sake of duty."

Senja could feel the weight of her words pressing down on him. His mind raced, searching for a solution anything that could keep them from being torn apart. But the truth was undeniable. They were two people caught in a world that didn't want them to exist together. They could run, but only for so long.

"I will go with you," Senja said suddenly, his voice firm. "I cannot let you face this alone."

Elizabet's eyes widened, disbelief and fear flashing across her face. "You would leave everything behind for me?"

He nodded. "I would leave it all. For you."

Her gaze softened, tears threatening to spill from her eyes. "But what about your life here? What about your future?"

"I don't want a future without you," he replied, his voice unwavering. "We can find another way. A new life. A life that belongs to us alone, away from all this."

Elizabet looked torn, her internal struggle playing out in the anguish on her face. The love they shared was a force so powerful, it threatened to undo them both. Yet, deep down, she knew the consequences of such a decision would be far-reaching, far more dangerous than they could ever imagine.

"I want to believe that, Senja," she said quietly, her voice thick with emotion. "But we cannot escape what is written for us. I have duties, obligations that are not just my own."

Senja reached out, his hand gently cupping her cheek. "No one can decide our fate but us, Elizabet. Not the court. Not your mother. Not anyone else. We can create our own path. If we choose to fight for it."

She closed her eyes, taking in a shaky breath. "But the consequences… they will be grave."

Senja pressed his forehead to hers, their faces inches apart. "We've already paid the price by loving each other. Let's not let that price go to waste."

There was silence between them for a long while, the tension in the air palpable. It was as if time itself had frozen, holding its breath as they stood on the precipice of a choice that could change everything.

Finally, Elizabet opened her eyes, her voice barely a whisper. "Then we leave. Together."

It was a choice neither of them made lightly. But in that moment, surrounded by the cold stone walls of the palace that had held them captive for so long, they made a vow—one not to be broken.

With trembling hands, Senja took her hand, and together, they turned away from the life they knew, stepping into the unknown.

As they walked through the grand hall, their footsteps echoed in the empty corridors, the sound of their defiance ringing in their ears. The palace, once a place of dreams, now felt like a prison they had to escape.
