Chapter 79 - The Matriarch's Reckoning

I checked my gold pocket watch for the fourth time in twenty minutes, irritation mounting with each tick of the second hand. Aurelia was never late for our weekly tea—especially not by an hour. The girl treasured our time together as much as I did.

"Gregory," I called sharply. My butler appeared in the doorway instantly, back straight as a board. "Any word?"

"None, Matriarch Valois. I've called her cell phone five times now."

I rose from my wingback chair, ignoring the twinge in my hip. At eighty-two, my body sometimes betrayed me, but my mind remained sharp as ever.

"Something is wrong." I fingered the silver wolf pendant at my throat—the twin to the one I'd given Aurelia. "Did you reach Julian?"

Gregory's hesitation told me everything before he spoke. "I'm afraid not, Matriarch. His phone goes straight to voicemail."
