> Gunshots. Screams. A little girl crying. Bodies falling. Then, silence.
A heartbreaking cry from a broken child:
Joseph: Why!? Why!! WHYYYYYYYYYYY?!!!
---
[Five years later - Morning, in a small dark room]
Joseph suddenly sits up in bed, panting, drenched in sweat.
Joseph: Haa... That damn dream again.
His grandmother's voice echoes from the hallway.
Grandma: You had that nightmare again?
Joseph: I thought you'd stopped spying on my nights...
Grandma: I worry, that's all. You should pray before sleeping, it would calm you.
Joseph: Pray? Did you see where that got me last time? If He really existed, my parents would still be here. My sister too.
Grandma: Joseph...
Joseph: No. He didn't lift a finger. He let them die like dogs. So He better leave me alone now.
Joseph gets up, puts on his hoodie, and grabs his phone.
Joseph: I'm heading out.
Grandma: Don't you want to eat something?
Joseph: I'll go to Maïck's.
---
[Hallway - Charles, the grandfather, calls out with a harsh voice]
Grandpa: Hey, kid!
Joseph: What now, old man?
Grandpa: Don't bring any trouble here. This house ain't some gang hideout.
Joseph: I see... I'll do my best not to dirty your precious environment.
Joseph slams the door without looking back.
Grandpa: Tch... That kid's gonna end up in jail.
Grandma: Charles, you can't talk like that! He's your grandson!
Grandpa: Nothing proves he's mine. His mother ruined my son, and now he's on the same path.
Grandma: He's angry, not bad. He's just in pain.
---
[Outside - In front of an abandoned gas station]
Joseph waits. He watches the street, silent. A motorcycle approaches. A young man in a cap nods at him.
Maïck: Yo, bro! Still alive?
Joseph: Sadly for you.
Maïck: You look more depressed than usual. That's nice to see.
Joseph: Hand me the helmet, I'm not in the mood to talk.
Maïck hands him the helmet with a smile. Joseph gets on the motorcycle.
Maïck: Got work waiting at the depot. There's something new.
Joseph: What kind?
Maïck: The kind that brings in big cash... or makes heads roll.
Joseph: Perfect. It'll keep my mind busy.
