RJ called the Royal Engineers first. She was initially given the runaround until Dr. Granger got on the line. "This is the Commander, CTCRM. We have an urgent situation and you have been dicking around with my LTs precious time. I need to speak with the Chief Logistics Officer immediately!" he yelled in the phone. "Yes Sir" was heard. The Logistics Officer came on line. "Lieutenant Olson, Logistics Officer. How can I help you?" "LT. Olson. This is LT. RJ at CTCRM. The Commander has asked me to obtain as many Czech Hedgehogs as you may have. Our need is extremely urgent and of importance to national security." She said. "Let me check the national inventory" Lt. Olson said. A few minutes later…"Here we go. I've tracked down about 200 of them. How soon do you need them? And do you have a requisition number for them?" he asked. "I don't have a requisition number for you at this moment; however, if you could start gathering the resources, I will have a requisition number for you within the hour. Will that work for you? As we mentioned, this is an urgent matter of national security – we are trying to get everything squared away, but it has been a bit hectic. You have my name. You can contact me at CTCRM, I am in the war room. Thank you for your help in this LT. Olson. You will be saving lives. LT Olson – there is something else you could help us with, for the same situation and location. We are in need of excavators with operators, underground utility locators, and either spare I-beams of 2-3m length, and maybe some concrete. We need to dig 10-15 pits 5-6 m deep, approximately 5x5m. The I-beams will need to be made into sharpened steel pogo sticks and embedded in the bottom of the pits, with a layer of concrete at the bottom. Then we need to camouflage the pits with something light. We will need all the equipment and materials transported to Oxford today, and the pits completed tonight. Is this something you can help us with as well? " "National security, you say?" LT. Olson asked. "Yes LT. We are anticipating a large-scale terrorist strike tomorrow and are trying to set up a defense. Are you able to help us?" LT RJ asked. "I believe I can. I'll get rolling on getting what you need. You get me those authorizations. Oxford – that will take us about 4 hours to assemble and transport once I have those authorizations." Not a half hour later he had the authorizations and put everything in motion.
December 22, 1995, 18:00 Christ Church, Oxford College. The area around Christ Church had been closed off in all directions – the word in the streets was there was an attempted terrorist attack using toxic gas. The Royal Engineers had finally arrived, and with all the trucks and equipment coming into the Quad area, the locals knew something was about.
Evan had joined the Response Unit team to mark out where to put the pit traps and Hedgehogs. The engineers were scanning the proposed locations for underground utilities now. Excavators and dump trucks were being off loaded from their transport. The Hedgehogs were being off loaded from the flatbed trucks using a crane. Hermione and her father were able to get some termite tents but no nitrogen, at least not in the amounts they needed. They worked with other engineers to get the tents put up over the top of the buildings.
The Response Team decided to set up three 4-man teams inside: one entrenched team in each annex adjacent to the tower; and two roving teams. As planned, sniper nests were prepared along the rooftops overlooking the quad and tower. Additional sniper nests were posted on the rooftop of the annexes adjacent to the tower but facing outward, in case an attack occurred from that direction, ten total. Each sniper nest was equipped with an L115A3 Precision sniper rifle equipped with 5-round-magazines of standard and armor-piercing 0.338 Lapua Magnum full-jacketed rounds; a 50-caliber BMG, and either two Javlin or Dragon anti-tank missiles each.
