Chapter 37 - 37

[Velmora — Subsurface Vault Grid, Sector 4A]

The vaults beneath Velmora were a cold, forgotten place—buried behind false schematics, hidden even from most high command. Kiro moved through them silently, draped in the dead Kargal soldier's armor, eyes scanning for biometric triggers.

His Blood Core pulsed faintly in warning.Something was wrong here.

"System, trace last cryo-vault breach."

Kiro's breath caught.A.V.? Aurex Vellan.

He found the archive door cracked open. Inside, black frost had grown across the floor like veins. Terminals were dead. The air hummed with something unnatural—something not Viora, not tech.

It felt alive.

In the center of the room, an exposed console blinked erratically. He approached. Burned into its side was a line of scorched text:

"Cold silences heat. Silence gives shape to pain."

Kiro uploaded a blood probe into the slot.

[SYSTEM ALERT: Inversion Sequence Fragment Retrieved — Partial Cipher Unlocked]

The screen glitched, showing fractured glimpses of Aurex's data thefts: Viora remapping procedures, emotional severance rituals, neurological black-ice constructs.

And a schematic of El'Vertigo Keep.

Kiro's jaw tightened.

Whatever was happening, it was centered there—and Aurex was moving again.

[El'Vertigo Keep — Upper Quarters, Pablo's Chambers]

Pablo sat at the edge of his bed, still sore from the earlier punishment, staring at the frost-covered window. His fingers trembled—not from pain.

From the whisper.

It had started an hour ago.

Faint. Cold. Alien.

"You should have let him die."

He shot upright. "What the hell—who's there?"

Silence.

Then—

"He wears a dead man's skin. His blood hums wrong. Wrong. Like fire."

Pablo backed away, breath quickening. The room felt colder than it should. His hand brushed against the mirror, and for a moment—

His reflection didn't match. His eyes… were ice white.

He staggered back.

"No. No, this isn't real."

But in his mind, the voice deepened. Calm. Ancient.

"You opened the door, Pablo. You let me in."

Suddenly the door to his room burst open—two El'Vertigo guards stood there, eyes wide.

"Sir! Another corpse was found. Frozen. Just outside the Vaultgate perimeter."

Pablo snapped out of it, forcing himself to stand.

"Where?"

"Near the crypt stairs. Four layers deep. It's spreading—fast."

He nodded slowly, jaw clenched. "Tell my father I'm going."

"Yes, sir."

But in his mind, the whisper smiled.

"Good, little ember. Come deeper. Let me show you what burns beneath the ice."
