Chapter 2 - The Silent Stare

The days after seeing Nicole in the hallway passed in a blur. Erica's mind couldn't shake the image of their eyes meeting, the brief moment of recognition that felt like both a curse and a blessing. Every time she saw Nicole in the crowded halls, her stomach twisted with a strange mix of longing and bitterness.

It didn't help that they had several classes together, including biology, which was a constant reminder of what used to be. Nicole sat a few rows in front of her, laughing with friends, occasionally throwing a glance over her shoulder toward Erica. It was nothing overt—just enough to leave Erica wondering if Nicole still thought about her, even just a little.

Erica had tried to focus on the lesson, but it was impossible. Her mind kept drifting to the past, to the moment when Nicole had turned away from her and everything had changed.

Risha was observing her in silence even though she didn't talk to Erica cause she knew that if she asked questions Erica won't tell her anything she keeps eyeing on her all day and it was not just Risha who notice Erica's weird behavior the group also noticed it.

Kim raised her arm. "Teacher can we sat on back".

"And why do you want to sit on the back?". The teacher stared at her fingers on her eye glasses.

"Teacher our vice president can't hear the lesson". Kim smiles at their teacher and after observing the students at the back the teacher agreed but still confused.

The group sat on the back closed together. Their classmates doesn't really wanted to change there seats because they can't hear the lesson well, they just agreed to change seats because of Audrey. She asked the boys at the back to change their seats with them or else she won't let them to be her suitors.

"Heu guys what was happening to Erica?". Vinish wishpers while her eyes was on the black board for their teacher not to notice them.

"It was normal". Steph smoothly said, turning the page of the book as if she was really reading.

"You also know it?". Risha was said loud disturbing the whole class.

"Miss. Risha. Could you please lower your voice. You're disturbing the class". The teacher looked at her. "And what's with the noise?".

"Nothing teacher it was just a cockroach". Kim answered fast. The teacher just continue the lesson while the group was scolding Risha.

"Can you please be careful next time. We almost got caught". Audrey pinched her.

"Okay fine. I will be careful now. Happy?". Risha said.

"So what was going on? We're friends right? Why don't we know about this". Vinish said trying hard to wishper.

Risha and Steph told them the whole story on how did Erica and Nicole broke up. Risha said that she was there when Nicole broke up with Erica, and same as Seph she was there too.

"We need to spy on her". Risha suggest.

While chatting the group didn't notice that the class was already ends a few minutes ago and Erica already leave.

"Guys where did Erica go?". Vinish asked.

All the eyes turned to her. "Wait what!!?". They said.

They rushed out the building and shocking to saw that Nicole was walking towards Erica.

At the hallway Erica packed up her things, she heard someone approaching. She looked up to see Nicole standing by her desk, fidgeting with a lock of her hair.

"Hey, Erica," Nicole said softly, her voice uncertain. It was the first time they had spoken in weeks.

Erica froze, her heart racing. She had imagined this moment, but now that it was real, she wasn't sure what to say.

"Hey," Erica replied, her voice quiet. "What's up?"

Nicole hesitated before speaking again. "Can we talk? Just... for a minute?"

Erica's chest tightened. She didn't know if she was ready for this conversation. But there was no turning back now.

"Yeah," Erica said, nodding slowly. "Okay."

They walked out into the empty hallway, the silence between them deafening. Nicole leaned against the lockers, avoiding Erica's gaze.

"Look, I... I know I messed things up," Nicole started, her voice thick with emotion. "And I don't know what I was thinking when I ended things. I just—I wasn't in a good place. I was scared, and I didn't know how to handle everything." She finally looked up at Erica, her eyes searching, full of regret. "But I miss you. I miss... us."

Erica's breath caught in her throat. She wanted to say something, wanted to ask all the questions that had been swirling in her mind for months. But all she could manage was a shaky breath and a whisper.

"Why did you leave?" Her voice cracked with the weight of the question.

Nicole bit her lip, her face contorting with pain. "I thought... I thought I was protecting you. But I was just running away from myself. From us. I was scared of how much I needed you, Erica."

For a moment, neither of them spoke. The hallway was quiet, but the words hung in the air between them. Erica wasn't sure if she could forgive Nicole just yet, but hearing her speak, hearing the rawness in her voice, made her heart ache in ways she hadn't expected.

"I don't know if I can do this," Erica said softly, her voice trembling. "I don't know if I can just pick up where we left off."

Nicole nodded, her face falling with disappointment. "I don't expect you to. I just wanted you to know that I'm sorry. And if you ever want to talk... I'm here."

With that, Nicole turned and walked away, leaving Erica standing there, her heart torn between the past and the present.
