Weiwei stepped onto Onigashima with a trace of apprehension. The island was vast, its defining feature being a massive, horned demon's headâits weathered surface forming the island's core.
The island's name, "Onigashima," came from this colossal demonic skull. In ancient Wano folklore, it was believed to be the embodiment of a malevolent spirit that once brought chaos to the world.
Weiwei couldn't help but wonderâhad such a monstrous being really existed in the ancient One Piece world? Standing beneath the massive fossilized skull, she was overwhelmed with awe.
Tapping into her "Voice of All Things," she sensed the lingering malice inside the demonic remains. Whatever it was, it wasn't just stone. Her training in the Lulusia Kingdom had sharpened her instinctsâshe trusted her senses more now than ever.
Before departing, she'd let Ace hit her repeatedly to push her Kenbunshoku Haki to the next level. Now at Level 5, her range and clarity had greatly improved.
Weiwei closed her eyes and scanned the island. She sensed no immediate threats powerful enough to kill her in one strikeâthough, of course, it was possible the enemy's Haki far surpassed her own. In that case⊠tough luck.
Ace arrived shortly after, leading his crew ashore in stealth. This wasn't a direct assaultâit was a covert infiltration. Unlike his younger brother Luffy, Ace approached this wisely.
Though they didn't fully grasp Onigashima's layout, they split into three teams.
"I'm going after Kaido. Miss Bayu-chan, you're finding the communication room. Deus, take the crew and rescue the imprisoned Wano villagers. Everyone clear on the mission?"
Rescuing civilians would be easiestâKaido's forces treated most villagers as manual labor or test subjects. They were likely kept in the dungeon. With Deputy Captain Deus leading a sizeable team, liberating them would be simple.
But Ace and Weiwei's missions would be more dangerous.
Weiwei spoke first. "I don't sense any overwhelming presence here, but it could just mean the enemy's power is beyond my range. We move separately."
Thunder rumbled overhead. Black clouds coiled above the demon-shaped island, lightning cracking as cries echoed faintly on the wind. Onigashima lived up to its nameâit felt devoid of life.
"Right," Ace nodded. "When you locate Kaido, send a signal."
That last part was clearly meant for Weiwei. Where he got his confidence was anyone's guess. She chuckled quietly, pulled her cloak up, and slipped into the shadowsâdisappearing into the night.
"She's a Devil Fruit user too?" Deus asked Ace. "Do you know her ability?"
Ace shrugged. "Not a clue. I'm heading out. Stay sharp."
While Weiwei vanished into the dark, Ace had no such giftâhe just sprinted across the terrain like a track athlete, racing toward the castle.
âŠ
On the first floor of Kaido's fortress, inside a storage room, Weiwei had already subdued a minor officer and began interrogating him.
The intel she got was staggering.
"You mean⊠Kaido took his whole command squad to chase the Golden Lion?!"
The pirate she gripped swore it was the truth.
Golden Lion? Where did he come from? Weiwei was baffled. To confirm, she killed him and caught another. Then another. Seven interrogations later, every answer was the same: Kaido wasn't here. Neither were the All-Stars nor the Tobi Roppo. The Beast Pirates had dispatched nearly all major combatants to pursue the Golden Lion.
One pirate even recounted the drama in great detail: apparently, Golden Lion had picked a fight with one of the All-Stars. Quinn's beloved red bean mochi had been destroyed in the chaos. Enraged, Kaido lost his temper. Golden Lion, ever disdainful of "bratty upstarts," mocked Kaidoâ"When I ruled the seas, you were still swabbing decks!" A legendary clash followed. Though wounded, Golden Lion fled. Kaido, valuing total eradication, gave chase.
Weiwei burst out laughing. She'd prepared a dozen escape strategies for this mission, yet none were needed. There wasn't a single real threat left on the island.
Then she noticed a deep sword mark at the palace gatesâprecisely the kind carved by the Golden Lion's "Shiki Chikiri." She'd recognize it anywhere.
"Jackpot," she grinned. With the top dogs gone and only fodder left behind, what was there to fear?
"Where's the communication room?" she asked the last pirate. "Lead me there and I'll spare your life."
Still cloaked in shadows, she guided the frightened officer ahead. He couldn't see her, but he heard her voice and complied quickly, trembling as he unlocked a doorâinside were several Den Den Mushi.
Weiwei immediately killed him and picked up the nearest snail.
"Karu!" she called out.
Far away in Torrance Town, Karu the duck was in the middle of a card game with the hotel hostess and a nosy aunt. His luck had been terrible all dayâhe'd barely drawn anything above a 10. When the Den Den Mushi rang, he immediately dropped his cards and pulled the receiver.
"Quack!" he cried, delighted.
Weiwei's tension finally eased. She could even hear the hostess in the backgroundâclearly, Karu had been living comfortably.
"Listen up," she instructed. "Stay in the hotel until I return. Don't wander anywhere. Got it?"
"Quack! Quaâ⊠QuackâŠ"
"Huh?" Before she could respond further, all she heard was static. Looking down, she saw the snail's eyes swirlâknocked out.
She didn't even need to guess why.
A violent burst of Conqueror's Haki had just erupted to the west side of Onigashima. Even without seeing it, she knewâit was unmistakably Ace.
