Kyle doesn't move. His face is inches from Tanner's, voice barely above a whisper as the words escape before he can stop them: "Do you remember what happened last night between us?"
Tanner's breath catches. "Kyle, I uh…"
"Yes or no," Kyle demands, eyes searching Tanner's face for any sign of truth.
"Yes," Tanner finally admits, voice low, hesitant.
"Then why are you acting like it never happened?" Kyle's voice breaks, frustration and hurt pooling beneath the surface. "It's worse this way than if you'd just said it was a mistake and you wanted us to forget it happened. Because that fleeting simple moment is affecting me more than you realize, and this pretense is just making it worse."
Tanner's shoulders slump. "It was a mistake. I wasn't thinking, and I'm sorry." His voice is small, almost defeated.
Kyle's chest tightens.
The words sting, but they're clearer than the silence. Slowly, painfully, he slides away from Tanner's chest, the warmth suddenly cold between them.
