Chapter 35 - Waiting in the Dark

I haven't made any moves for some time now. I need to get a grip on myself. I need to know what I'm doing. I need to be prepared. I don't know what Matteo is dealing with, or what's going on with Lorenzo. Could Lorenzo actually be telling me the truth, or is he lying? He's such a sneaky person. What should I do? What are they planning? For now, I'm going to keep a low profile. I won't follow them, not yet, until something serious happens. Lorenzo will keep me updated. He's going to keep me updated. I know that. But still, I want to find out things myself about this world—the world of the Mafia.

Luna's mind was full of thoughts. She stood up from her bed and started walking around, deep in thought. Why was she folding her arms and thinking so hard? She decided to call Matteo. He picked up immediately. But before he could speak, Luna shouted, "You didn't come home last night. You told me you would be back that night, but you didn't. And now it's already morning! You didn't even bother to call me or anything!"

Matteo stayed quiet for a moment before saying, "Sorry, Luna. I'm sorry. It won't happen again. If I'm not coming home sometime, I'll make sure to tell you. I know you'll worry about me. Sorry."

Luna, still feeling tired, had hardly slept the previous night because she had been so worried about Matteo's safety. She knew he was dealing with something, and that kept her up all night. She kept thinking. Finally, she decided to eat before going to sleep. She went downstairs and made rice with stew and chicken. She put it all on a plate—it smelled really good. After preparing the food, she went back upstairs to her room to sit down and eat.

She ate slowly, feeling relieved as the hunger she had been ignoring all night began to fade. But it wasn't until she called Lorenzo and he reassured her that Matteo was safe that she started to feel a little better. She continued eating, enjoying the chicken and the meal. She then took out a book to keep herself busy. Even though she knew she was going to feel sleepy soon, she didn't want to just sit and eat. After finishing the meal, she decided to sleep. She planned to wait for at least an hour and a half for the food to cool down a bit so she could sleep more comfortably. She picked up her book and began to read.

She read for about an hour but started feeling sleepy. She forced herself to stay awake. When 30 minutes passed, she checked her phone and realized it had already been 1 hour and 30 minutes. She set the book aside and collapsed onto her bed, falling asleep instantly.

Meanwhile, Matteo was feeling down, weighed down by the way Luna had spoken to him. He had forgotten that he should've called her, knowing full well she would be worried. He was tired, both physically and emotionally, so he lay down on his bed to sleep as well.

In the afternoon, while Matteo was still sleeping, he heard a knock on his door. He groggily stood up and opened it, finding his bodyguard standing outside.

"What are you doing here? Tell me," Matteo said with a stern expression.

"Sir, I apologize for disturbing you, but the doctor is here. I just wanted to let you know. I've received my treatment, and it's your turn now," the bodyguard explained. "It seems that you're injured as well."

"Okay, I'll be down in about 20 minutes," Matteo replied, closing the door behind him.

He paused for a moment, then suddenly remembered his injuries. "Oh, I almost forgot," he muttered to himself as he removed the plaster from his hand. He had forgotten to tend to his injuries properly. He took off all the plaster he had used to cover his wounds, and decided it was time for the doctor to treat them properly.

Matteo changed out of his pajamas, putting on a singlet and long jeans, before heading to the living room where the doctor was waiting.

"Sir Matteo, please, you have my greetings," the doctor said.

"No problem. It's an honor for me to meet you," Matteo replied. "I've heard about the work you've done for society, the orphanage, and everything else. Thank you, it's a privilege."
