“Nothing slips past you, I see.” A small smile tugged at the corner of my mouth as I lifted my gaze to meet Adrian’s squarely.

He seemed to possess an unsettling knack for detecting when my mind would stray—particularly if I became distracted by thoughts of another man while in his company. I was hardly the type to wear my heart on my sleeve, yet he always seemed to see right through my impassive façade. It was rather unfortunate that the man who should be paying attention to my reactions remained oblivious while the one whose attentiveness I loathed remained oddly concerned.

“The truth is, there’s more than a handful of things that I find disagreeable,” Adrian breathed as his fingers delicately thumbed the white bandage around my neck. “Why do you permit him to touch you?”
