Chapter 76 - Chapter 76: Unexpected Encounter

The Mankey that had previously been driven off by Roggenrola's attack had somehow returned without anyone noticing.

The reason Pidgeot hadn't raised an alert was simple after defeating them so easily earlier, it no longer deemed the Mankey worthy of its attention. They simply weren't strong enough to warrant a warning.

And even if they really did attack, Pidgeot was confident it could react in time.

Moreover, it trusted Roggenrola's judgment. That little guy had great instincts for detecting threats and sure enough, it was Roggenrola who'd noticed their return.

After being hit by Roggenrola's attack, the Mankey had been about to erupt in fury, but then Pidgeot's cold gaze swept over them.

Their bristling fur immediately flattened. It was as if nothing had happened.

They were classic bullies only brave when the opponent was weaker.

A wild Pokémon's fury was hard to stop, but even that depended on who they were facing. Pokémon living in the wild had a strong sense of self-preservation.

Having been crushed earlier without even getting a proper hit in, the pain and fear from Pidgeot's attack still lingered deep in their hearts.

If it had been a Primeape, maybe its rage would've overridden reason and charged straight in, but Mankey weren't quite at that level.

One of the Mankey, seemingly the leader, hesitated for a moment before finally stepping forward, urged on by the other three.

From behind its back, it brought forth something it had been carrying and raised it up in front of Pidgeot, offering it for inspection.

Pidgeot gave it a glance. Just some dull-looking rocks. Nothing interesting.

But Silas's eyes narrowed. These were two ancient fossils even if they were small.

The Mankey chattered noisily in front of them, and the general meaning was clear: they wanted Pidgeot to become their leader.

They had never seen a Pokémon stronger than Pidgeot. If it led them, they believed they could dominate this entire forest.

As a sign of sincerity, they offered up their most precious treasures, hoping Pidgeot would accept them.

Pidgeot glanced at its Trainer, who showed no particular response, and instantly understood.

It spread its wings and motioned for the Mankey to place the fossils on the ground.

Human-like joy spread across the Mankey's faces. They believed this meant Pidgeot had accepted their submission.

With such a powerful boss to back them up, they wouldn't have to worry about being killed by predators anymore.

Pidgeot flapped its wings, and the Mankey gathered closer, assuming their new boss had something to say or instruct. They hurried to stand before it in a line.

"Whoosh!"

With a powerful gust of wind, Pidgeot unleashed Hurricane.

The four Mankey, stunned, were lifted into the air by the violent winds and sent flying deep into the forest.

Pidgeot figured it was already being kind. At least it hadn't blown them into the rocky cliffs.

Landing among the trees would allow them to use branches to break their fall. Given the physical durability of Pokémon, they wouldn't die just need some rest.

After all, Mankey were known for their nimbleness.

If they'd been flung toward the rocky terrain, it'd be another story each rock would become a grave, filled with shattered bones of Pokémon who had been too reckless.

Silas was stunned by Pidgeot's sequence of actions.

Where did it even learn to pull something like that?

Pidgeot let out a sharp cry, shaking its body as it looked at him. Its wings twitched slightly in annoyance.

Hey, zookeeper, why are you spacing out? I even brought you a present. Hurry up and start the massage again!

Silas gave it a light knock on the head and sighed in exasperation.

To be fair, Pidgeot's personality was at least partially his doing.

In this world, unlike the games, a Pokémon's personality didn't drastically affect battle mechanics no arbitrary percentage bonuses or nerfs. That just wouldn't make sense biologically.

But personality still had a subtle impact.

For instance, a Brave Pokémon would adjust better to battles at a younger age, while a Rash one might charge ahead recklessly and fall into traps more easily.

Thankfully, Trainers could observe from the sidelines and give real-time instructions to correct such behavior, mitigating most of the negative effects of a Pokémon's nature.

More often than not, a Pokémon's personality was shaped by its upbringing and the one who had the most influence was its Trainer.

In Pidgeot's case, Silas had been raising it since it hatched from its egg.

Back then, he didn't really have any friends to talk to. The only companion he could converse with was a little Rattata but sadly, that one had been killed by a Spearow's talons.

So, Pidgey became his second best friend and a confidant he could talk to without holding back. After all, he never had to worry about Pidgey repeating anything he said.

After all, it would require translating from human speech into Pokémon speech and then back into human speech again. The meaning would get so distorted in the process that no two people would ever interpret it the same way.

Somehow, during all those long conversations, Pidgeot ended up with its current personality sharp-tongued and incredibly chatty.

The scary part was that his Combusken seemed to be picking up the same habit. Thank goodness Roggenrola hadn't caught on. What a relief.

"Cha—"

Combusken suddenly made a mistake mid-move.

"Scree-leh!"

Scyther barked in disapproval. What's going on with you? You just zoned out all of a sudden!

"Cha."

Combusken quickly apologized and got back to its training, though it couldn't help but feel puzzled. Just now... it had the odd sensation that its Trainer was calling it. Was it just hearing things?

Silas, on the other hand, picked up two small fossils and examined them. Yep he had no idea what they were.

He stuffed them into the bottom of his backpack. Whatever free stuff is free stuff. Might as well hang on to them. Who knows? They might go up in value someday and make him rich.

Leaving behind the food reward for Scyther for the evening, he glanced at the time, then said his goodbyes with his three Pokémon in tow. He still had a mission to complete today.

Make money, make money!

Silas gave himself a pep talk in his heart.

Scyther watched the backs of the Trainer and his three Pokémon disappear into the distance. Then it carried its food and flew off, hoping that the human and his Combusken really would come back the day after tomorrow, just like they promised.

Its aging silhouette looked especially lonely.

Whoosh! The automatic doors slid open.

Silas stepped through the doors of the Pokémon Center, just as the sun outside was beginning to set.

He'd had decent luck after finishing Combusken's training, he quickly located his mission target, defeated it, collected the required materials, and turned them in for a small profit.

After restoring his three Pokémon, he was suddenly struck with a random idea: why not go check out that little house on the white cliffside by the Cape tonight? So many couples visited that place it was supposedly famous for its sunset views.

He'd been in this area for several days now and hadn't gone to see it yet. Might as well.

Stepping out the front doors, Silas pulled out his electric scooter and took off toward the cliffs.

As he sped along the path, he saw couples riding tandem bikes in every direction. Off to the side of the road, a Smeargle was busy showing off its artistic talents.

Reaching the top of the cliff, he found a section cordoned off with warning tape, guarded by a rare Clauncher with a massive cannon-like claw.

Looks like some rich family's kid came here to play, Silas thought to himself.

Next to Clauncher giant claw sat a small figure with orange hair, only partly visible in the shadows.
