The door opened, and what our eyes met sent a cold chill running down our spines, my racing heart slowly coming back to normal.
"I'm sorry I had to stop by to get you this," Doctor Jack pleaded as he moved closer to hand over the little nylon bag.
"I have informed Alex about the checkup, but he's resistant at the moment. Let's hope it turns out positive."
I just watched without a word as he left the room.

Next morning
"Really? You mean you can help?" I blurted it out before my brain could catch up with my heart.
He looked at me, his eyes full of pity; sheer pity.
"Everything I'm doing, it's just a favour, and I know I can't just sit back and watch the countless humiliations and brutality meted out on you," he declared, and I lowered my head, my mind reeling in grief at his words.
"Thanks," the words left my lips.
He picked up his calls, ordering a replacement for my flight documents and an alternate exit from the hospital.
