"I... I..." she paused, and our gaze turned toward the door that had just creaked open. Ella walked in.
"Hi, how are you doing..." she trailed off as her eyes landed on the woman standing nearby. Her face shifted quickly, and without another word, she turned and bolted out of the room.
"Why was she standing so close to you?" Ella asked, flicking her gaze from the now-closed door back to me.
But my mind was still wrapped in the words the nurse had spoken, words that stirred something restless within me. Why did Ella have to come in now?
Her gentle tap on my shoulder brought my attention back.
"Don't tell me you've got your eyes on her," she said, and I shook my head in disapproval.
"Eyes on her?" I echoed.
Silence stretched for a few seconds, then I took her hands in mine.
"Don't think any less of me. She was just here to check on me and report back to the doctor. That's all," I assured her as she tightened her jaw thoughtfully.
