After missing Charlotte at her father's house, Tanner searches everywhere.
He uses every possible means, even drawing on the new powers recently bestowed upon him, his heightened senses, sharper than any other wolf's.
At one point, he picks up a faint trace of her scent. It's mixed with a masking spray commonly used to confuse a wolf's tracking ability, but Tanner is too strong.
He catches it anyway. Just as he's about to reach her, the scent vanishes again
, completely. Every time he gets close, she slips away, moving as if she knows someone is chasing her.
Tanner exhales in frustration. Chasing after her like this is pointless, and deep down, he knows it.
He's wasting precious time. There's only one hour left before the five-hour mark ends.
If he keeps this up, he might return to find Jess already gone. And when Jess decides to leave, no one, not even Tanner himself can stop him.
